2011 Ascension Cellars Ascendance "Melange" Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot - Wine of the Day

2011 Ascension Cellars Ascendance "Melange" Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot

2011 Ascension Cellars Ascendance "Melange" Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot

$56

Our fathomless unfiltered Bordeaux-style blend was long aged, barrel fermented and hand racked for thirty-six months in French oak barrels. It is luscious, sleek and complex with floral red currant and spice box aromas that lead to layered, concentrated flavors of black cherry, mocha, white pepper, sweet cinnamon and oak that jump from the glass. Velvety-soft, round tannins linger on the mid palate, producing a rich, elegant, dry finish. Enjoy now or be rewarded if allowed to cellar for 3 years or more.

2011 Ascendance is beautiful alone and compliments medium to sharp cheddar cheeses, roasted game hens, duck, pork, grilled steaks, prime rib, filet mignon, lamb and good friends. Fill your glass with beauty and lift your spirits.

2011 Humanitas Good Earth Cabernet Sauvignon - Product Of The Day

Be the inner chef! Take a little white pepper, throw in some dark fruits like raspberries, blueberries and even some cranberries, toss in some chocolate, fresh Bing cherries, a little cola, and a dose of baseball glove leather (seriously!) and you’ve got the complex nose of the Reid Vineyards Cab. On one hand it's ‘classic’ Napa Cab, and on the other hand it's uniquely Reid with a tantalizing dose of winemaker Rob Lloyd. Think classic, yet dynamic and mysterious. It calls out for a classic steak dish or a bold roast. And music always completes the vibe. Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Mozart, Beatles, Pearl Jam?

Tasting Notes

This Pinot Noir is still very young, will cellar for years to come and needs some decanting, if only in the glass, for the full bouquet to evolve. Brilliant garnet in color, the flavor profile starts out with cherry/black cherry and cedar, and as the wine opens up with flavors of orange zest, fig, butterscotch, cardamom and black tea, with a long, silky finish. Pair this wine with turkey, ham, salmon and savory vegetarian dishes like stuffed mushrooms or ratatouille.

Terroir

This old vines vineyard of Pinot Noir was planted nearly 50 years ago (1966) by Pat and Duncan Haynes in what is now the Coombsville AVA, east of the city of Napa. Proximity to San Pablo Bay contributes to the temperate climate of Coombsville, with cooling effects of marine air and fog occur almost daily during the growing season Located in the wide alluvial deposits created by the wearing down of the hillsides, the Coombsville soils contain abundant rock, gravel and, in some areas, are layered with volcanic ash deposits from Mount George.

2012 Nobelle Wines Grenache/Syrah

$ 28.00

This production was harvested by hand in the fall of 2012: 65/100 Kiler Canyon syrah was harvested in September and 35/100 Staar Ranch grenache was harvested in early October. It was then aged 24 months in new French oak barrels.

VINEYARD NOTES

Kiler Canyon is home to some of the best syrah in the county; it shares a fence line with Terry Hoag Cellars a well-established winery and a big syrah house as well. Conditions were ideal! A mild leaf thinning had to be done in August to get full sun exposure and good ventilation against potential mildew.

WINEMAKING NOTES

The syrah was pungeon fermented; we removed the head of 2 Cadus Medium toast pungeons and introduced the freshly crush fruit. Punch down was done twice a day by hand, the 2 wines were made separately then blended together and aged for another 6 months in a brand new pungeons.

TASTING NOTES

Impressive coffee bean scent when you open the bottle, follow by toasted bread and nutty aromas. The mouthfeel is soft and velvety, but the tannins are strong. Thanks to the syrah, a long acidity from the grenache makes the finish linger. A solid red with at least a 10 year aging potential.LIMITED PRODUCTION 186 CASES

Bright ruby violet color carried by lovely aromas of rich, ripe blackberry, cassis liqueur, black licorice, fine leather and rhubarb.  A hint of gamey roasted meats give the wine immediate complexity and interest.  On the palate, the wine follows the nose with dark marionberry and black plummy flavors. Juicy acidity provides balance for the round, soft tannins and lingering finish of cola, coffee and sweet oak.

The third year of drought and the direst year on record, was coupled with an early bud break and a hotter than normal summer. Overall the harvest started earlier than normal. Although with slightly lower yields, an incredible quality and concentration was obtained, especially for red varietals.

TASTING NOTES

Omen, Red Blend is an explosion of flavors and intensity. From spices to cassis and dark cherry notes, the complexity of the blend transcends into subtle notes of leather and dark chocolate. The mouth feel is rich with luscious and elegant tannins. A very bold and powerful wine that is still approachable and balanced.

WINEMAKING

In order to create the complex foundation of Omen, we work with a vibrant community of distinguished vineyards across the Sierra Foothills. Each block has been fermented separately to be able to preserve the single characteristics of the variety and the vineyard. The blend is then created and aged in 30% new oak for 8 months.

2013 Agnitio Sauvignon Blanc - Product Of The Day

2013 AGNITIO SAUVIGNON BLANC

VINTAGE

The 2013 growing season was early, even and all-around excellent. A warm, dry spring brought early bud break, helped with canopy vigor and berry size, and created ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set under sunny skies. With the exception of one heat spike in late June and early July, temperatures were consistently in the zone for optimal vine activity, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and began to ripen. This vintage gave us the extraordinary gift to pick what we wanted, when we wanted.

TASTING NOTES

Aromas of bright citrus, grapefruit, orange peel, and kiwi are expressed on the nose while hints of anise and limestone suggest an elegant minerality. The palate is driven by its extraordinary acidity, giving this wine a refined crispness and long lasting finish.

WINEMAKING

Grapes from the Oak Knoll and Coombsville AVA’s were gently whole-cluster pressed for over four hours. Juice was racked off its lies after it had a chance to settle down in a tank for 24 hours at 50°F. WINEMAKER NOTES

Late harvest wines have always captivated our imagination. When we purchased our property in Knights Valley in 1987, the existing Sauvignon blanc vineyard surprised us with an area that provided the necessary conditions for botrytis cinerea each harvest. This “noble rot” has allowed us to coax an amazingly complex wine from our tiny hillside vineyard. Once only produced for family and close friends, we can now share the fruit of our passion with you.

There is an immediate sense of cigar wrapper & leather that opens to cocoa, cassis, cola and a bit of pomegranate juice mixed with warm blackberry purée...

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS

Sugarloaf Mountain offers a unique terroir for Bordeaux varietals in the Napa Valley. Unlike warmer vineyards up-valley, the climate of Sugarloaf naturally provides a longer hang-time resulting in profound color and flavor intensity. Combined with a southwestern exposure and a rock-laden soil harvesting the sun’s energy, this extraordinary terroir delivers the exceptional ripeness necessary for both the power and complexity required of great Cabernet- and Merlot-based wines.

The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard lies in the heart of the Napa Valley’s emerging Coombsville region. Recognized for its unique terroir for over 40 years, the Coombsville area is now the newest official AVA in Napa. Located on gently-sloping terrain, this site provides a micro-climate perfectly suited to growing muscular Bordeaux-varietal wines exhibiting the distinctive terroir of this cool growing region.

WINE DESCRIPTION

The wine is dense, dark and intense! There is an immediate sense of cigar wrapper & leather that opens to cocoa, cassis, cola and a bit of pomegranate juice mixed with warm blackberry purée. Let the wine sit in the glass and experience it change over time with several of these flavors moving to the forefront for a bit, then stepping back to let another take the lead. It is a muscular wine, no doubt, but with a hugely rewarding finish of vanilla, cocoa and almost a velvety texture.

Bottling Date: July 8, 2011
Appellation: 100% Napa Valley
Blend: 69% Cabernet Sauvignon,  16% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot

The 2013 growing season was early, even and all-around excellent. With the exception of one heat spike in late June and early July, temperatures were consistently in the zone for optimal vine activity, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and began to ripen. This vintage gave us the extraordinary gift to pick what we wanted when we wanted.

TASTING NOTES

Rich gold color in the glass, with aromas of green Anjou pear, guava, and white peach blossom, this wine offers an aromatic complexity that can only come from the unique site of Durell Vineyard. The depth of the minerality in the mouthfeel is juxtaposed with a creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Hints of French pastry and spicy oak highlight the long, luscious finish.

WINEMAKING

Our grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed for over four hours (Press cycle used in Champagne). The juice was racked off its lies after it had a chance to settle down in a tank for at least 24 hours at 50°F. It was 50% fermented in a concrete egg and 50% in barrels, with a blend of 50% new French oak and 50% neutral oak. Only 25% of the wine was allowed to go through malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the brightness of the wine and gain just enough roundness on the palate. Aged "sur lies fines" for 12 months, this wine will cellar for years.

TASTING NOTES

This proprietary blend marries the blue-black fruit of Petite Sirah with the brightness and elegance of Zinfandel. Petite Sirah provides big fruit and tannins, while the Zin provides the brightness and finesse of a lighter, more refined raspberry-strawberry notes and a lingering silky finish. The cab/merlot/cab franc provide more structure and depth. This wine is surprisingly quaffable and easily paired with a variety of foods.

TERROIR

The grapes in this wine represent a marriage of the best from three vineyards in two counties – all at higher elevations and all benefiting from cool Pacific breezes at night. Petite Sirah grapes are from Amber View Vineyard in northern Lake County, while the Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc come from Wild Diamond Vineyard in the southern part of the County. The Petite Sirah has bigger tannins and dark, dense fruit while the Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc have softer tannins than many Napa Cab blends to the south. Both enjoy shorter than normal harvest periods but fully ripe fruit because of their vineyard elevations of over 2,000 feet. The Zinfandel from Firebrick Hill Vineyard to the west, however, enjoys a cooler climate and longer growing season, resulting in a more refined, layered fruit as evident in this wine’s long, silky finish.

Blend:                         75% Petite Sirah, 20% Zinfandel, 5% Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc

Anthem's inaugural vintage of Merlot is a Cab-lover's Merlot, and is an incredibly deep, intense wine. The 2010 Merlot's aromatics are dominated by plumbs, black berries, charcoal and dark chocolate. On the palate, there are red fruits (raspberries, red cherries) as well as melted fudge, roasted meats and licorice that tail off into a smooth and amazingly long finish. Although it is hard to imagine a better Merlot, this will will age and improve beautifully for at least another 5-7 years and pairs well with any pasta or meat dish. Grown on Mount Veeder. Drink now through 2019.

2012 Humanitas Cabernet Franc - Product Of The Day

Oft overlooked, occasionally maligned, but ever adored around here, the Cabernet Franc variety is shown off in its full glory when grown in Willy's Vineyard. There's something seductive about this wine, from its aromas of cinnamon, clove and worn leather to its soft, full mouthfeel and imposing structure. We love the way dusty tannins can melt into tantalizing flavors of cherry cola wiping our sorrows away. Charles Mingus is playing in the background, the aromas of a beautiful meal are wafting in from the kitchen, I'm on my second glass, and I'm pretty sure life doesn't get much better than this.
