HARVEST INFORMATION

The grapes for this Counter Punch Petite Sirah were hand-harvested on September 21, 2013 from the Paso Robles AVA at 26.0 Brix. The 2013 vintage was a couple of weeks ahead of schedule, so the grapes had the long hang time that was important to great vintages. The vineyard experienced a hot early summer, it cooled some midsummer, the heat returned for the end of summer and remained well into the early fall. The outcome of these ideal weather conditions was early brim accumulation with refreshing acidities. The deciding factor as to when to pick was based on the balance of acids and flavors rather than the numerical value of the sugar.

WINEMAKING INFORMATION

The fruit arrived at the winery in 1/2 ton bins where destemming and hand-sorting occurred. Fermentation proceeded in a small tank for five days. The free-run was transferred directly into neutral barrels for settling. The young wine was racked from the neutral barrels into a combination of new and one-year old French and American oak barrels where it aged for an additional year. The wine was bottled unfined and unfettered in April 2015.

Tasting Notes

This offering from Brooks Note is an elegant ruby color typical of Weir vineyard. Aromatically, it offers notes of blackberry, cherry, raspberry, leather, and black tea with a hint of jasmine.  As it opens up, there’s a touch of clove and herbs de Provence. In the mouth, it has a lovely smooth entry, structured tannins and balanced acidity with flavors of cranberries, tart cherries, blackberries and anise. The silky texture continues through the palate with nice weight. It has a long, finish of cranberries, dark cherries and bright licorice. The cherry lingers quite a while once the wine is gone.

THE VINEYARDS AND VINTAGE

Weir Vineyard is in the Yorkville Highlands, about 7 miles south of Boonville. It sits between 900 and 1000 feet, on a south facing slope with well drained, rocky soil. The lower, eastern portion of the vineyard was planted in 1992. The slightly higher, western portion was planted in 2000. During the growing season, there is a 40-50 degree temperature shift between day and night. Both the elevation and the coastal air moving down the Anderson Valley provide cooling for the vineyard. We use Rochioli and 2A clones from the lower, eastern blocks and RC clone from the western blocks. In 2013, heavy fruit set meant that we needed to drop lots of grapes prior to veraison to maintain flavor intensity in the finished wines. Our mild summer with late rains meant the grapes could hang on the vines longer, building beautiful ripe fruit flavors and silky tannins, without higher alcohol.

WINEMAKING

The vineyard was hand-picked well before sunrise the morning of September 20th. A small amount (about 10%) of the Pinot Noir fruit was left on the stems, while the remainder was sorted and de-stemmed (but not crushed) into 1 and 1.5 ton fermenters.  The wine was allowed to cold soak for 3 days, and then warmed in the sun. Fermentation began from native yeast, and finished within 2 weeks. Wines from the three different clones were kept separate and blended just before bottling. We used two new Remond barrels. All the others were neutral French oak. The wine was bottled in March of 2015.

Tasting Notes

Our 2011 Anthem Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet is a testament to how much a great site with well drained, rocky soils can mean. This wine shows great bright red fruits, spicy smoked meats, and spice. On the palate, it is full weight and incredibly smooth and seamless, exhibiting more red fruits along with dark chocolate, licorice, and candid cherries. This Cabernet has tremendous elegance, suppleness, and breadth, and will be superb with any meat dish. Exquisite to drink now, and will be even better in 3-8 years.

Our 2011 St. Helena harvest was later than usual. Early autumn rains prompted many to harvest their grapes at lower Brix, but we took our chances and successfully weathered the storm so that we could pick fully ripe grapes of the highest quality. Due to the beautiful sunny, dry weather in the weeks before our arrest, our 2011 wine has gorgeous color, and deep, complex flavors.

Siren, our seductive Provençal-style GSM rosé, was cold fermented in stainless steel with limited exposure to oxygen, retaining the subtle nuances of the crisp fruit and high-tone esters. The nose bursts of strawberry, Bing cherry, orange blossom and clementine mandarin oranges with a beautiful palate of citrus and watermelon accompanied by a bright minerality, acidity and sophistication that will call you back for more. Pair this wine with fresh goat or feta cheeses to medium-bodied Spanish Manchego cheeses, shellfish, salmon, duck, pheasant, goose, pork, turkey, and pasta.

2013 Nobelle Wines Carmenère - Product of the Day

$ 39.00

VINEYARD NOTES

Colbert in San Miguel is one of the only vineyards to carry the varietal in the region. Carmenère always ripens late; mid-October to mid-November is the usual picking time. The leaves turn black in fall, which is very surprising and rare! 100% Carmenère.

WINEMAKING NOTES

Ahhh Carmenère! I never worked with it in France and always liked the Argentinian/Chilean style that was easy to achieve here, thanks to the growing conditions in 2013. The fruit came cleanly to the winery and right after crushing (less than 24 hours later) we inoculated the batch with classic Bordeaux yeast. After press we moved the wine to a Le Roi pungeon where it aged for 24 months. 76 cases produced.

TASTING NOTES

This varietal has a light and delicate perfume. The density of the wine is very interesting, a lot of weight, followed by long and smooth spice. It will go perfectly with a rack of lamb with rosemary or similar, the simpler the better!

Tasting Notes

"Dark red magenta in the glass, it's dark and yet bright.  The purity on the nose is impressive, with ripeness perfected and the oak balanced.  There's a sweet core of fruit on the palate, chock full of dark red cherries, cassis, wet tobacco and sweet earth.  60+second finish that has nice tannic grip without being 'drying'.  Impressively rich in all the right places, the wine continues to evolve with air, telling me that a two-hour decant is probably wise.  Drink now and for 7-8 more years for optimum drinking."  Chris at Calwine.  (Dec.2014)

2012 was amazing by any standard. All of this fruit came to full maturity with good color and acids, the natural hot springs underneath Julie’s Vineyard provided all the water and nutrients that the grapes needed to survive.

2012 Humanitas 'Good Earth' Rio Vista Pinot Noir - Product Of The Day

2012 HUMANITAS 'GOOD EARTH' PINOT NOIR RIO VISTA VINYARD

$ 55.00

Tasting Notes

Our 'Rio Vista Vineyard' Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, begins on the nose with a mouth watering sensation of strawberry/rhubarb pie and delicious spices baked into the mix. Right behind the pie are some earthy elements and touches of pepper, tobacco, smoked meats and a hint of orange peel. This is duck wine - or perhaps a comfort food roast beef or fresh Alaskan salmon grilled over a wood plank with light herbs. It evolves so much in the glass, maybe a bite of all three! It is at once sultry and at the same time playful, so perhaps pair this with some Madeleine Peyroux and a few of your more quixotic friends!

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS

The ‘Good Earth’ tier celebrates specific vineyards showcasing a distinct style of a particular varietal unique to that vineyard site. In Santa Barbara County, there is a special piece of land nestled in a canyon amongst the Santa Rita Hills that is chalk full of…well…chalk (!). It gently ambles to the ocean…it is foggy, cool, sometimes brooding…and perfect for Pinot Noir.

The Rio Vista Vineyard is a star within the highly acclaimed Santa Rita Hills appellation. Betweenthe hillside plantings on chalky soils and the long, cool growing season, the wines off this vineyard are noted for their depth of color and complexity of fruit. Balance is a word that immediately comes to mind – worthy of drinking tonight or aging for decades.

WINE DESCRIPTION

Our Humanitas 2012 ‘Rio Vista Vineyard’ Pinot Noir begins on the nose with a mouth watering sensation of strawberry/rhubarb pie and delicious spices baked into the mix. Right behind the pie are some earthy elements and touches of pepper, tobacco, smoked meats and a hint of orange peel.

In the mouth, the fruit is very bright up front and the texture is thick in the middle and finish. A little flint & stone pops in followed by cigar wrapper, leather & black pepper. This is a complex wine, yet very easy to drink. It changes a lot in the glass…over and over again. This is duck wine – or perhaps a comfort food roast beef or fresh Alaskan salmon grilled over a wood plank with light herbs. It evolves so much in the glass, maybe a bite of all three! It is at once sultry and at the same time playful so perhaps pair this with some Madeleine Peyroux and a few of your more quixotic friends!

Tasting Notes

Our fathomless unfiltered Bordeaux-style blend was long aged, barrel fermented and hand racked for thirty-six months in French oak barrels. It is luscious, sleek and complex with floral red currant and spice box aromas that lead to layered, concentrated flavors of black cherry, mocha, white pepper, sweet cinnamon and oak that jump from the glass. Velvety-soft, round tannins linger on the mid palate, producing a rich, elegant, dry finish. Enjoy now or be rewarded if allowed to cellar for 3 years or more.

2011 Ascendance is beautiful alone and compliments medium to sharp cheddar cheeses, roasted game hens, duck, pork, grilled steaks, prime rib, filet mignon, lamb and good friends. Fill your glass with beauty and lift your spirits.

A proprietary red blend that marries three primary varietals native to the Rhone Valley of France: GrenacheSyrah and Mourvedre (GSM). This classic-style blend resembles the Southern Rhone Chateauneuf du Papes blends in which the spice of the Grenache, lavender fragrance and perfumed berries of the Mourvedre and the dense, tannic fruit of the Syrah are united in a way that creates an earthy, yet explosive combination of flavors suitable for pairing with a wide variety of savory dishes or by itself.
